Lucky for us, the rainy days of spring are gone, and summer is here in all its sunny glory. I was hoping that my skin will also appreciate the rise in temperatures – instead, it has become irritated and acne prone. While this may have happened because of some personal stress that’s not related to the weather, I did struggle to find the right combination of products to make my skin behave itself again. And the help I needed came from COSRX, a brand I was already happy with and wanted to explore some more. So, if you’re curious to know what I discovered, just keep on reading.

Rise and shine – COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

The concept of the right pH for the skin isn’t new, but it has recently become a trendy subject for the cosmetics industry. I have read that the COSRX Low pH cleanser was actually developed in response to the requests of the company’s customers, which impressed me a lot. It has been demonstrated that low pH cleansers can benefit your complexion by preserving the right amount of oils, instead of stripping them out. This way, dryness and irritation are minimised, and you’re left with the right type of glowing skin.

In addition to a carefully balanced low pH (of about 4,5), the COSRX Low pH cleanser contains an impressive amount of skin beneficial ingredients: fermented Saccharomyces extract, Tea Tree Oil, Botanical Extracts and Betaine Salicylate – a natural form of beta-hydroxy acid. They all work synergistically to properly cleanse your skin, while helping it stay healthy.

I ignored the name and used the gel cleanser both in the morning and at night, together with my trusted LUNA sonic device. It has a mild tea tree fragrance which is not too powerful and does not linger of the skin after you rinse. My skin felt clean and happy, but not too tight and I’m sure that at least part of the improvement I had in the breakouts situation was due to this. The only thing I had to be careful with was not to bring it too close to my eyes, because it’s not formulated for this area and it might sting a bit.

Step up the game – COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid

The other big change in my skincare routine was replacing my COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid with its BHA alternative. The AHA helped me a lot during winter and spring, when my skin was drier. But, with the comeback of sunny days, I got increasingly oilier and felt the need to switch to something different. As you may already know, Beta Hydroxy Acid is oil soluble and has the ability of acting both on the surface of the skin and inside the pores to get rid of blackheads and blemishes. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect that helps with post breakout redness and with the overall sensitivity of the skin.

But what I probably like the most about this product is that it also helps with anti-aging! In addition to Willow Bark water and Betaine Salicylate, it contains Niacinamide, which further boosts the anti-inflammatory qualities of the formula, while at the same time improving the look of pores, pigmentation and fine likes. It also features hyaluronic acid for a shot of extra-hydration, not usually found in BHA products.

The product comes in a glass bottle with a pump and you get 100 ml, which is quite a lot and will probably last me a good few months. The liquid is transparent and runny, with very little smell. It spreads on the skin very easily and goes from slightly tacky to a smooth, weightless surface in about 1 or 2 minutes. It didn’t leave any stinging or burning sensation, which was lovely, since my skin was quite irritated and a bit more sensitive than usual. As in the case of the cleanser, I avoided the eye area, where I use my trusted Benton eye cream anyway.

The effects took about 10 days to start appearing, but after that they were cumulative: my skin gradually cleared and even the most stubborn chin blemishes were diminished, along with the post breakout redness. I’m hoping that another month of using this product will help me see even better results.

Treat yourself – COSRX Light Fit Real Water Toner to Cream

This product intrigued me so much when it was first launched and perhaps my biggest interest was related to the texture. I hoped it would be light enough to use as a moisturiser on my increasingly oily skin. I also wondered about the ingredients and whether it could work its hydrating magic without clogging my already irritated skin. And, I must admit, I was also curious about the fragrance.

First things first: the texture is really surprising. It starts off as a cream-to-gel formula, but when you rub it on your skin it becomes water like and soaks in quickly, leaving a matte finish. Then comes the actual formula: a water plus sea water base (great source of minerals), plus several good moisturising and anti-aging ingredients like Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid and Hippophae Rhamnoides Extract. The last one, also known as Sea Buckthorn, is a natural source of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Carotenoids, which work together to deliver their anti-oxidant effects. And, in case I needed anything else to make me love it, it also has the fresh, citrusy notes of Bergamot oil, which is actually the last ingredient on the label.

A word of warning, though. As much as I enjoy the light, refreshing texture of this product, I believe it is best for oily to mixed skin. If you have dry skin, you’ll probably need something a bit more emollient, although I guess you could still use this product like a toner. But for my skin, it delivers the exact dose of moisture I need, with no added greasiness or problematic effects.

That’s all of my current COSRX favourites! I am happy to have found a great skin care routine for this season and I hope that I will look my best right until the beginning of autumn. 🙂
